EV Charging Connector Types in India, Explained

CCS2, Type 2 AC, Bharat DC-001 and GB/T explained: which connector your electric car uses, the real charging speeds, and why matching beats chasing peak kW.

The four you will actually meet

CCS2 is the DC fast-charging standard on nearly every passenger EV sold in India today — Tata, Mahindra, MG, Hyundai, Kia and the European marques. If you bought your car new after 2021, this is almost certainly your fast-charge port.

Type 2 AC is the slow-and-steady companion port on the same cars, used for home wall boxes and destination charging at malls and offices. Bharat DC-001 is the older low-power DC standard still found on early Tigor and e-Verito fleets, and GB/T appears on some imported and commercial vehicles.

What the numbers mean

A 7.2 kW Type 2 AC box adds roughly 40–50 km of range per hour. A 50 kW CCS2 DC charger adds that in about eight minutes. A 120 kW unit, where you can find one, will take a mid-size EV from 20% to 80% in around 35 minutes.

Charging slows deliberately above 80%. This is battery chemistry, not a fault — the final 20% can take as long as the first 60, which is why fast-charge sessions are usually best ended early.

Matching matters more than speed

A 150 kW charger is worth nothing to a car that accepts 50. Peak station output is capped by whichever is lower: the charger, the vehicle's onboard limit, or the battery's temperature and state of charge at that moment.
