Three ways to charge an EV in India
Every electric car owner in India charges in some mix of three ways: at home on a wall or portable charger, at a public AC or DC fast-charging station, or through an on-demand valet EV charging service that does the public charging for you.
Each one trades off time, cost and convenience differently. The right mix depends on where you park at night and how much you drive.
Home charging: cheapest, if you have a spot
Charging at home on a residential electricity tariff is usually the cheapest energy you can put in an EV, and it happens while you sleep.
The catch is access. Many apartment residents don't have a dedicated parking spot with a power point, and housing society approvals for chargers can take time. Home AC charging is also slow, which is fine overnight but no help when you need range quickly.
Public charging: fast power, slow process
Public DC fast chargers add range far quicker than a home socket, and networks are expanding across Indian cities. But the charging itself is only part of the time.
You drive to the station, check which chargers are working and match your connector, sometimes queue behind other cars, then wait out the session. A typical visit takes 60 to 120 minutes, and you often only know the final cost after the session ends.
Valet EV charging: public charging without the waiting
